What is OTA Exam?
The Officers Training Academy (OTA) entry is conducted through the CDS Exam by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for graduates aspiring to join the Indian Army as commissioned officers.
It is one of the most respected defence entry pathways in India, allowing both men and women to serve as officers. The selection process evaluates candidates on academic knowledge and officer-like qualities through the written examination, followed by the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview and medical examination.

Nationality Criteria (Detailed)
A candidate applying for the CDS Examination must be one of the following:
- i) a citizen of India, or
- (ii) a subject of Nepal, or
- (iii) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (ii) and (iii), above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.
Certificate of eligibility will not, however, be necessary in the case of candidates who are Gorkha subjects of Nepal.

Age Criteria
To be eligible for the Officers Training Academy (OTA) through the Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination, a candidate must fall within the age limits specified in the official UPSC notification.
- For OTA (Men): Candidates must be between 19 and 25 years of age.
- For OTA (Women – Non-Technical Entry): Candidates must be between 19 and 25 years of age.
Only candidates born within the prescribed date range mentioned in the official notification are eligible, and no age relaxation is permitted for any category. Candidates are advised to carefully verify their date of birth before applying.

- For the Officers Training Academy (OTA), both unmarried and married candidates are eligible to apply.
- There is no restriction on marital status for OTA entries; however, candidates must ensure they are able to fulfil all training requirements and service obligations as specified in the official UPSC notification.

- Educational qualification for entry to the Officers Training Academy (OTA) through the CDS Examination requires candidates to meet the degree criteria specified in the official UPSC notification.
- OTA (Men & Women)
Candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognised university or equivalent. - Candidates in the final year of their degree course are also eligible to apply, provided they submit proof of passing the qualifying examination within the timeline mentioned in the official notification.

Gender & Physical Standards
The CDS Examination is open to both male and female candidates.
Candidates must be physically and medically fit according to the standards prescribed by the Armed Forces.
Medical fitness is assessed only after clearing the SSB Interview, and is mandatory for final selection.
- General Medical Requirements Include:
- Minimum height as prescribed for the respective service
- Weight proportionate to height and age
- Normal vision standards as per service norms
- Normal hearing
- No permanent bodily deformities
- No chronic or long-term medical conditions

OTA Selection Proccess
The selection process for the OTA entry is conducted in multiple stages, and a candidate must qualify each stage separately to move forward. Final selection is based strictly on merit and medical fitness.
Stage 1: OTA Written Examination
Conducted by Union Public Service Commission
Candidates first appear for the OTA written examination conducted through the Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination by UPSC.
The exam consists of English and General Knowledge only, with no Elementary Mathematics paper for OTA candidates.
Selection for the next stage is based on written exam performance and the cut-off marks decided by UPSC.
Important: Only candidates who qualify the written exam are shortlisted for the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview.
Stage 2: SSB Interview
Conducted by the Services Selection Board
The SSB Interview is conducted over 5 days and assesses a candidate’s Officer Like Qualities (OLQs).
SSB Stage I: Screening Test
- Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR)
- Picture Perception and Description Test (PPDT)
Candidates who fail Stage I are screened out and do not proceed further.
SSB Stage II: Psychological & Group Testing
Candidates who clear Stage I undergo the following:

- Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)
- Word Association Test (WAT)
- Situation Reaction Test (SRT)
- Self-Description Test
Group Testing Officer (GTO) Tasks
- Group discussions
- Outdoor group tasks
- Command task
- Lecturette
Personal Interview
- One-to-one interview with the Interviewing Officer

- Final assessment and recommendation decision
Stage 3: Medical
- Candidates recommended by SSB undergo a medical examination conducted by authorised military medical boards.
- Medical standards are strictly as per Armed Forces norms.
- Both temporary and permanent unfitness can lead to rejection.
There is no relaxation in medical standards.
Stage 4: Final Merit
The final merit list for OTA is prepared based on:
- Written examination marks
- SSB Interview marks
(Medical fitness is mandatory for final selection.)
Commission is granted in the Indian Army through the Short Service Commission (SSC) and depends on:
- Merit rank
- Medical fitness
- Availability of vacancies
Candidates placed in the final merit list receive joining instructions from the respective Service Headquarters and must report to the Officers Training Academy (Chennai) for training, subject to medical fitness and availability of vacancies.
OTA Syllabus
The OTA written exam syllabus is designed to assess a candidate’s academic knowledge, analytical ability, and general awareness expected from a graduate-level aspirant. The syllabus is prescribed by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and is uniform for all candidates appearing in the examination, with subjects varying based on the academy applied for.

OTA Result/Cut Off
The OTA cut-off is the minimum score required to qualify for the next stage of the selection process. It is decided every year by the Union Public Service Commission based on multiple factors.
Written Exam Cut-Off
This is the minimum score required to qualify the OTA written examination conducted through CDS.
It is calculated out of 200 marks:
- English: 100 marks
- General Knowledge: 100 marks
Candidates must:
- Secure the overall written cut-off, and
- Obtain the minimum qualifying marks in each paper separately, as decided by UPSC.
Only candidates who clear the written cut-off are issued SSB call-up instructions.
Final Cut-Off
For OTA – 400 Marks:
- Written Examination: 200
SSB Interview: 200
